Where We're Based — And Who We Reach
Cole Engineering Ltd is based at 1183 Hauraki Road, Netherton — right in the middle of the Hauraki Plains. That central location means we're within practical reach of a wide ring of towns and rural areas, from Thames in the north to Morrinsville and Matamata in the south.
We run both a fully equipped workshop and a mobile engineering unit. That means clients have two ways to access our services: bring the job to us, or let us come to you. For many farm and transport breakdowns, coming to you is simply the faster and smarter option.
How Far Is Cole Engineering From Each Town?
Here are approximate driving times from major towns in the region to our Netherton workshop:
| Town / Area | Approx. Drive Time | Main Route |
|---|---|---|
| Ngatea | ~10 minutes | SH2 / Hauraki Road |
| Paeroa | ~20 minutes | SH26 North |
| Thames | ~30–40 minutes | SH25 / SH2 |
| Waihi | ~35–45 minutes | SH2 South |
| Morrinsville | ~35 minutes | SH26 |
| Matamata | ~45 minutes | SH27 / SH26 |
| Huntly | ~50 minutes | SH1 / SH2 |
| Hamilton | ~60 minutes | SH26 / SH1 |
And our mobile unit can cut those times to zero — if you're in the field with a broken hydraulic line or a damaged attachment, we'll come to you rather than making you haul a non-functional machine.
What Services We Provide to the Region
Our services aren't limited to clients who can drive to the workshop. Here's what we can do across the Hauraki Plains and surrounding area:
Heavy Vehicle Fabrication and LT400 Certified Repairs
We hold LT400 certification for drawbeam and drawbar repairs — the NZTA certification category required before a structurally modified or repaired heavy vehicle can return to the road legally. This is relevant to transport operators across the region: tipper operators, tow truck companies, contracting firms and anyone running heavy trailers.
LT400 work needs to be done by a certified engineer, and there are limited certified workshops across the Waikato. If you're in Thames, Paeroa, Waihi or the broader Hauraki district and need drawbeam work signed off, Cole Engineering can carry out and certify the repair.
Hydraulic Repairs — Workshop and Mobile
Hydraulic failures are one of the most common call-outs we respond to. Whether it's a split hose on a dairy farmer's machinery in Ngatea, a blown ram on a Paeroa contractor's excavator, or a hydraulic system problem on a truck near Thames — we carry hose stock, fittings, seals and ram repair capability.
In-workshop, we can handle full hydraulic system rebuilds, ram resealing and custom hose fabrication. On mobile, we handle most hose replacements and minor fitting work on-site.
Structural Steel Fabrication
We fabricate custom steel structures for agricultural, industrial and commercial clients throughout the region. Farm building frames, equipment mounts, storage solutions, custom brackets, loading ramps — if it's steel and it needs to be built or modified, bring us the drawings or describe the problem and we'll make it happen.
Farm Machinery Repair and General Engineering
Rural New Zealand lives and dies by its machinery, and breakdowns don't wait for convenient timing. Cole Engineering's mobile unit is specifically designed for on-farm repair — we carry welding equipment, cutting tools, hydraulic gear and a range of common spares to handle a wide variety of breakdowns on the spot.
Quick tip for urgent breakdowns: If you're in the field and something has failed, call us before deciding whether to try to move the machine. In many cases, on-site repair is faster, safer and cheaper than towing. Our mobile number for urgent work is 021 033 9882.
Engineering Supplies — Available at the Workshop
We stock a practical range of engineering supplies at the Netherton workshop: hydraulic hoses and fittings in common sizes, fasteners, nuts, bolts, valves and related hardware. If you're doing your own repairs or maintenance and need parts, call ahead to check availability and come in.
Why Clients from Thames to Matamata Choose Cole Engineering
There are a few things that bring clients from across the region to us rather than looking locally:
- LT400 certification — not every workshop has it. If you need certified drawbeam or drawbar work, you need a certified engineer.
- Mobile service — we come to the problem rather than making you bring it to us. For large or disabled equipment, that matters.
- Over 20 years of rural engineering experience — the workshop has been serving this region for more than two decades. That's practical knowledge of the machinery, the conditions and the kind of problems that actually come up in the field.
- Practical approach — we're not a franchise or a city-based operation. We're a hands-on rural workshop that will work out the most practical solution for your specific situation.
How to Reach Us
The fastest way to get a job started is to call us directly on 07 862 3861 during workshop hours (Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM). For urgent after-hours breakdowns, try 021 033 9882.
You can also email us at smythesengineering@gmail.com or drop by the workshop at 1183 Hauraki Road, Netherton 3671.
For complex jobs — especially fabrication, structural work or anything needing LT400 sign-off — we'll often need to see the machine before giving you a solid quote. We can arrange a site visit or ask you to bring photos or measurements to help scope the work first.
